From December 1-3, Chisinau hosted a three-day intensive training for 26 Ukrainian and Moldovan trade unionists, focused on organizing strategies and sharing effective methods for recruiting workers into the unions. The event was part of the “Trade Unions Fighting Inequality and Reconstructing Peace and Democracy in Ukraine” program, implemented by the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO) in partnership with the NGO Labor Initiatives.
Thirteen Ukrainian representatives from different sectoral and regional unions affiliated with the Federation of Trade Unions of Ukraine (FPU), along with 13 representatives from sister unions affiliated with the National Trade Union Confederation of Moldova (CNSM), shared their experiences and gained valuable insights into organizing efforts.
Participants also learned from Norwegian trade unionists about best practices for recruiting new union members, engaging youth, and the particularities of the Norwegian model. The seminar was joined by Norwegian trade unionist Kjetil Larsen, who spoke about organizing and shop floor activism, and LO Norway youth leader Runa Kristine Fiske, who shared her experiences organizing students and young workers. Nataliya Yeremeyeva and Yanina Unnli joined from LO Norway, to present on the Norwegian social model, and facilitate the workshop.
This seminar laid the foundation for further organizational development work in Ukraine. The group of Ukrainian organizers will receive additional training and exchanges of experience on various aspects essential for running organizing campaigns and will work on mapping sectors and workplaces for organizing efforts.
